Dr. Robert Gronemann, 2023 Jury Member
As an instructor of music, Robert Gronemann is a classroom teacher at heart. As professor of music theory and ear training at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, his instructional mission is to inspire curiosity in music while being an ambassador for music learning. He has been teaching the piano for thirty-three years at various institutions and at his own Bach Studio. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the University of Minnesota School of Music. His primary piano instructors are Barbara Nymark, Dr. Richard Lange, Dr. Duncan McNab, and Dr. Rebecca Shockley. His music theory scholarship was guided by Dr. David Damschroeder and Dr. Michael Cherlin. He is active as a composer, author, and pianist. His most recent publication, Activities Companion to Ear Training in two volumes, is in its 6th edition. Selections from his cycle, Anchors Aweigh! Verses of Midshipmen of the United State Navy for chorus, piano, and trumpet was premiered in 2019. Robert Gronemann is currently working on developing music theory and ear training curriculum to serve students with diverse interests with his colleagues. He will collaborate in a spring colloquium celebrating Beethoven’s progressive compositional practice specific to the nineth symphony. His professional role in music extends with service to the Veteran’s Administration Creative Arts Competition and institutional representation to the National Association of Schools of Music and the Minnesota College and University Council for Music. While not working on musical endeavors, he attempts to perfect the game of cribbage and discover the secrets to cooking. These have had mixed results.
